Monitoring lead in water is nothing new. In 1991, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) implemented a Lead(Pb) and Copper(Cu) Rule, which included regulations and industry trends to protect public health from consuming lead and high levels of copper. While these regulations applied to new plumbing installation and repairs, they historically have not addressed existing service lines on customer property that may contribute to high lead levels.

Service lines are like straws that carry water to your house and from the water main. Often, the part up to the right-of-way or water meter is maintained by the utility; however, most of the service line is considered private and the homeowner's responsibility.

As part of our Lead & Copper Program, we are asking residents for their help to identify service line materials. This page provides all the information you need to prepare for the identification of your service line, along with a survey for you to complete.
